Like all other psychoanalytic theories, Self Psychology has evolved considerably over the years and has come to be referred to as Relational Self Psychology. James Fosshage and Estelle Shane, two major contributors to that evolution, will discuss highlights and nuances of the transformative changes in the theory and clinical practice of Self Psychology and very specifically how it has become Relational Self Psychology. The format will be a conversation between these two protagonists, spontaneously playing off one another, creating a psychoanalytic ensemble. Participants will have the opportunity to add their melodies as well.
Dr. Fosshage and Dr. Shane will share their perspectives on the following: 1. Kohut’s central contribution to psychoanalysis; 2. Kohut’s and current theories of therapeutic action; 3. Detailed clinical illustrations of how analysis “cures;” 4. the development and integration of ideas within Self Psychology and Relational analysis; and 5. Anticipation of developmental trends within Relational Self Psychology.
