Purpose

The Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology is a collegial organization whose purpose is to provide a forum for the ongoing discussion, study and elaboration of self psychology. APSP is based in New York City.

Programs

APSP offers a variety of opportunities for intellectual exchange. Presentations by significant contributors to self psychology explore major theoretical issues with clinical implications. Other relational perspectives are also presented with comparisons to self psychology.

On March 2nd, 2013 we were honored to have Frank M. Lachmann, PhD present Grandiosity, Entitlement and its Metastases: The Life, Music and Influence of Richard Wagner.

APSP also offers intimate programs where members present to other members and their guests. Programs for members include the series Original Papers by members, Close Reading of Texts, and Listening to Clinical Process held in members’ homes, which have generated a spirited give and take of ideas in an informal atmosphere. The series Case Consultations with Master Clinicians is an addition to our programs for members. Plans for future programs include discussions of how the practice of self psychology relates to a wide range of subjects such as attachment theory, trauma, shame, couples work, addictions, and dreams.

There are no fees for the Members Only series.

Prospect

Founded in 1987, APSP is distinguished by its commitment to democratic process and collegial interchange. Our vision is a network of self psychologists able to take part in the currents and controversies of this most vital and clinically productive school of psychoanalysis. We are still experimenting with the forms of presentation and participation that will best meet the needs of our members as well as the larger self psychological community.

You are invited to become a member of APSP. If you wish to join (or renew) please do so by mailing a check.
